Unemployment and appearance
Sir,—ln answer to accusations of generalisation regarding those who are unemployable made by L. M. Slater (June 27): Over the last two years I have advertised through the Labour Department, to fill seven positions. One, advertised late in 1981, was for someone between the ages of 25 and 35, to supervise, experience not necessary but helpful — one applicant. Position two was for someone of school leaving age to 20 years, no experience necessary but willing to learn. For this position, four applicants. Later we required an office girl; here I must admit that the standard was higher and the interest better. Six applied. Still closer to today, we contacted the Labour Department wanting yet another staff member, some welding experience being the only “qualification,” yet we obtained three applicants. Eight months ago two more staff were required, and we were to choose from seven. There are many unemployed who want to keep it that way. That is generalisation; it is also an educated fact. — Yours, etc., LINDSAY SMITH. June 28. 1983.
