Rugby crowd
Sir,—The unwarranted and severe criticism of certain crowd elements at Lancaster Park on June 28, by the correspondents, K. G. Male, F. I. Galt, B. C. Gardner and K. Bowling (“The Press,” July 1) has left me totally bemused. At the risk of besmirching the fair name of rugby supporters in other provinces I would suggest that Wellington, Auckland (especially), Dunedin and Invercargill all have their share of parochial, one-eyed enthusiasts who are not above generating the odd noise or two at a crucial point in a rugby match against visiting teams. Could it be that your correspondents have led a sheltered existence far from the “embankments of rugby life”; it would seem so by the contents of their letters. Canterbury supporters are no more ill-mannered, unsporting, boorish or badly behaved then those who follow rugby in the areas your correspondents reside in. For them to believe otherwise only serves to highlight their naivety. — Yours, etc., JOHN H. BROOKER. July 1, 1983.
