Conservation
Sir,—At last, responsible Blinking people in Government and law are realising the tremendous importance our natural environment is to the future of human-kind, morally and spiritually. This exquisite! planet we are privileged to havj as our home is being constantly plundered, by greedy, ruthless exploiters, with no thought for
future humanity. However, the decision to stop the building of the Franklin dam in Tasmania and to have the area as a wilderness region for all time, is certainly a brilliant light at the end of the tunnel. Let us now resolve to stop the plunder of our virgin forests. The Government must negotiate with the Maori owners of Waitutu forest, and this area, along with Waitutu State Forest should be added to Fiordland National Park. As Mr Talbot, member of Parliament, said (“The Press,” July 2): “It is our duty and responsibility to protect our environment from the ravages of a materialistic society.”—Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. Lyttelton, July 2, 1983.
