‘T.M.T.’ sexism
Sir,—Women have a wide variety of interests which may or may not include home-making skills. We do not seek “items for women” but an improved balance of features on people and their activities. The reviewer said: “The other items were interesting enough but again solely of male interest. Things like the young farmer of the year award ...” Mr Strongman should check his facts. The New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ clubs is an organisation for men and women who share an interest in the land. Many women farm in partnership with family or in their own right. The Skellerup Young Farmer of the Year contest, which is open to all members, is one of the highlights of the year for the fanning community. The regional and national finals are keenly contested and observed by men and women.—Yours, etc., LYNLEY M. ALDRIDGE. July 2, 1983.
Sir,—l believe it would be impossible for Rodney or any of his co-presenters to interview women in an equal, non-sexist manner. (Remember Rodney’s interview with Vicki Buck?) Thus, I agree with N.O.W. that a complete change in the spirit of “The Mainland Touch” is needed. I believe this will not be achieved unless women are involved with the production of the programme. I also support the comments made about the Cadbury commercial. An equally distasteful commercial is the likening of a blonde “sexsymbol” to the Starlet. If women had the money to buy such cars and the power to produce commercials would they liken cars to male sex-symbols? The dark, silent model; the strong, muscular engine; the arrogant, rebellious machine. Well, it’s a change from the longlegged, slim, passive, blonde image. — Yours, etc., PAT WILKINSON, Values spokesperson on Women’s Issues. July 2, 1983.
