Help sought on rape cases
PA Auckland Co-operaation from the public was needed urgently to curb the outbreak of violence towards women, said an Auckland police chief last evening. Seven women are reported to have been raped in Auckland in the last five weeks — three in the last two days. In Wellington, a woman was raped at knifepoint this week, when she was grabbed from a lift in a busy downtown shopping plaza. Detective Chief Inspector E. G. Perry said the recent
spate of rapes was of grave concern not only to police but to all society. The police did not wish tq alarm the public, but it was apparent that the assistance of the community was required, he said. “We have got to get cooperation because solving these matters is everybody’s business.” he said. “Where incidents come to the notice of the public, it is asked what the police be immediately informed by the quickest possible means. “We are committing all possible manpower towards the investigation of these matters.”
