Ban stops ferries

PA Wellington A Seamen’s Union freight ban on the inter-island ferries in support of the Federation of Labour’s campaign for a $2O a week wage rise resulted in sailings yesterday being cancelled. Aratika sailings from Wellington at 7.20 a.m. and 4 p.m., and from Picton at 11.40 a.m. and 8 p.m. were off. The Aranui sailed yesterday with cars and passengers only, at 10 a.m. and 6.40 p.m. from Wellington,

and at 2.20 p.m. and 10.40 p.m. from Picton. The superintendent of rail ferries, Mr Brian Lundy, said there would be a small backlog of freight as a result of the ban, which he hoped would be cleared by the end of the week-end. Mr David Morgan, president of the Seamen’s Union, said the freight ban was a national one affecting all New Zealand-manned ships and was to be lifted at midday yesterday.
