Hanging attempt in cell

A man who tried to hang himself in the cells at the Christchurch Central Police Station early yesterday morning is in a serious condition in Christchurch Hospital. The man, David John McFadyen, aged 28, an unemployed post cutter, of Dunedin, had been arrested

on Thursday evening and charged with unlawfully taking a vehicle. Soon afterwards a policeman making a check found McFadyen hanging by clothing in his cell, where he had been alone. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. He was not in the intensivecare unit yesterday but was still on the seriously ill list. •

McFadyen had attempted to kill himself several times, the police said. A few weeks ago he was rescued after being found hanging in a garage in Worcester Street. McFadyen was yesterday remanded in his absence to appear in the District Court in Christchurch on July 8.
