Animal welfare
Sir,—Like Edna Bruges (June 22), I was encouraged by Mike Moore’s comments regarding the plight of unwanted and abandoned animals. If the present system of dogcontrol is permitted to continue in this country, we are heading for an even more diabolical situation. While the deterioration in the economic scene is partly to blame, the true reason, as always, lies with the irresponsible and ignorant element of our society. Jailing and destroying defenceless creatures in pounds for man’s sins is an echo of man’s primitive nature, when the humane and logical answer lies in eradicating the cause. How can the Church continue to cruise along in neutral on issues concerning animal rights? — Yours, etc., ESTELLE WIN. June 27, 1983.
