Chilean policies
Sir,—l was pleased to see an editorial on General Pinochet’s failures (June 25). However, I find it disturbing that you can condone
the brutal military take-over of Chile by Pinochet, by saying that he was trying “to restore order to the economic and social chaos of Chile under President Allende.” The dreadful human rights record of Pinochet’s dictatorship is documented by Amnesty International and the United Nations. But the successes and failures of the democratically elected Government of Dr Allende will never be known because of United States interference in Chile — e.g. its successful sabotage of the economy by depressing world copper prices, and the C.I.A. involvement in the 1973 truckowners’ strike (ironic now that even the truckers think things “are much worse than during the Allende Government” (“The Press”, June 24). Surely under similar circumstances (i.e. outside interference) you would not support a military overthrow of a democratically elected government in New Zealand? — Yours, etc., D. L. JACKSON. June 28, 1983.
