Yachting changes proposed

PA Auckland The Yachting Federation said last evening that it would require experienced crews to man craft returning from ocean races. Its statement followed the release yesterday of a Government report on last month’s yachting disasters in which eight people died. A federation spokesman, Mr John Faire, said that committees would review crew selection, crew training and weather reporting. Their findings are expected to be completed by July 16 and then be put to the Minister of Transport, Mr Gair. Mr Faire said one option was to make the approval of return crews a condition of entry in ocean races. If crew members nominated for a yacht’s return voyage were deemed unsatisfactory, the federation could bar the yacht from the race, he said. If conditions of crew membership were broken during a race then the yacht or yachtsmen could be banned from future races. “The Government does not have jurisdiction,” Mr Faire said, “but the federation has direct authority over yachting clubs.

“We can enforce the rules. The committees will now see if doing that is practical.” h
