Taiwanese boat sinks
Special correspondent Wellington The Taiwanese fishing boat Jiuh Fong No. 64, which was found fishing within the 200-mile zone, has sunk. The Jiuh Fong left Auckland on June 15, but she sank after an apparent engine failure and hull flooding on Tuesday, about midway between Norfolk. Island and New Caledonia. <. From reports at
Auckland from her agent at Port Vila, Vanuatu, all her crew were safely taken aboard a sister ship Fong Chen, which is thought to be heading for Port Vila. It is believed the Jiuh Fong was working for the New Hebrides Fishing Company. H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato arrested the Jiuh Fong west of North Cape in May. The District Court at Auckland fined the one-boat
Taiwanese owner a total of $93,533, including costs. A further $lO,OOO had to be paid to the Crown for the release of the boat, which was automatically confiscated because of the offence. The lawyer acting for the owners of the boat, Mr Graham Hubble, said $103,633 in costs and fines were paid to the Crown before the boat left Auckland. r
