Three drowsed is May

PA Wellington Two of the three persons who drowned in New Zealand in May died while attempting to rescue others in difficulty. The third person drowned in a surfing accident. In the first five months of this year, 52 people have lost their lives in the water, compared with 53 in the

same period last year. Mr Michael Frohlich, executive director of the New Zealand Water Safety Council, giving the figures, said rough seas and flooded rivers were a principal cause of drowning at this time of the year. “Life-saving, rescue breathing, and survival swimming are skills which

can not only help people in dangerous water situations but can also greatly assist those unintentionally thrust into a rescue role,” he said. “A major percentage of the people who drown had no intention of actually being in water or being involved in any aspect of aquatic activity.”
