Press Union election
NZPA staff correspondent London Viscount Rothermere, the chairman of Associated Newspapers Group, has been elected president of the Commonwealth Press Union at its annual meeting. He succeeds Sir Denis Hamilton, chairman of
Reuters, who is retiring from the post after two years. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr John Hardingham, a former editor of the “New Zealand Herald,” who died recently. “He played a most distin-
guished role in C.P.U. affairs and New Zealand journalism,” said Sir Edward Pickering, chairman of the C.P.U. council. Mr Hardingham received the union’s Astor award in 1980 for outstanding services to commonwealth journalism.
