‘Home repairs dangerous’
PA Auckland Auckland electricians are concerned that home handymen could be killed if electrical laws are relaxed to allow them to do their own rewiring work. The Auckland branch of the Institute of Electricians has held a public meeting to decide on submissions on the proposal by the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, partly to deregulate the industry. About 100 people in the industry attended. A spokesman, Mr Bruce Thorpe, said
that the prime concern was for public safety. The loosening of plumbing by-laws in Onehunga should not be used as a precedent for the electrical industry, he said. “After all, faulty workmanship by the’ home plumber normally only means someone gets wet Incorrect electrical work can be fatal or result in persons suffering burns and shocks, or the start of a fire,” he said.
Electricians at the meeting agreed after a close vote that home handymen should be allowed to repair portable plug-in home appliances. But under no circumstances, they decided, should a non-registered person be allowed to alter or add to fixed wiring. Electricians and inspectors at the meeting said that they were horrified by some of the hazardous do-it-yourself work they had seen.
