Totalitarianism
Sir,—Susan Taylor’s letters are usually pro-communism and/or anti-American. The credibility of her logic is in question when she fails to bracket Poland with American-dominated developing countries. Her letter classically highlights the evil of totalitarianism, be it of the Left or Right. In the fight to overthrow totalitarianism it is reasonable that an organisation like the trade union movement can be a medium for organisation of a revolution which seems to be the only method of overthrowing totalitarian regimes. However, the fear is that the citizens may only be left with a different totalitarian regime exercising the same sort of political patronage highlighted in Susan Taylor’s letter. In truly democratic countries what anti-union feeling exists is when the leaders of unions fail to practise democracy. Susan Taylor’s silence on Solidarity matches that of the New Zealand union leadership.—Yours, etc., D. G. SANDERS (Sen.). June 24, 1983.
