Freedom from violence

Sir,—Your editorial of June 22 under this heading was thoughtprovoking. You note the decline in public safety and security, and the reaction among some citizens. I read from another source the concern of the Auckland police over the increasing number of juveniles who carry knives and are prepared to use them. You refer to the need for long-term solutions. May I suggest a stricter control over the portrayal of violence on TV and in films, together with the exercise of discipline, both public and private, in the viewing of such programmes. Impressionable minds are influenced by violent scenes, and the idea is formed that violence is the normal thing. The other solution is obvious and proven. By all means possible encourage children’s evangelism.— Yours, etc., H. G. ORAM. June 24, 1983.
