Travel cover investigation
PA Wellington The Human Rights . Commission is investigating complaints of discrimination against women in travel insurance policies which exclude cover for accidents or illnesses related to pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause. In its latest quarterly news publication, the commission says that it has had a number of complaints about sickness and accident insurance policies offered by several large companies. Under the Human Rights Commission Act, insurance companies are allowed to offer policies on different terms for each sex as long as the differential treatment is based on actuarial or statistical information.
The commission says it is having talks with the Insurance Council. It says the British Equal Opportunity Commission has adopted the view that pregnancy and childbirth as such may be normal bodily function, but that complications, such as miscarriages, are not normal and might reasonably be expected to be covered. This interpretation has been given to the Insurance Council. The commission says it is trying to resolve the matter and wants public comment. Meantime, the commission says different insurance companies offer different wordings on their policies and “shopping around” could be useful for women in particular.
