New products from DG

Data General has released seven new products, including a re-packaged version of the MV/8000 — the first system of its Eclipse MV series of 32-bit super-minicomputers. The new products are the MV/8000 II computer, four new Dasher terminals, a high-performance 354M8 Winchester-type disc subsystem, and a terminal emulation feature that lets Dasher terminals emulate IBM 3278 terminals, running IBM’s APL language system. The general manager of Data General New Zealand, Mr Charles Kent, said the new MV/8000 II offered users the performance of the Eclipse MV/8000 at the price of an MV/6000 system. “Using the same CPU and memory boards as the previous MV/8000, the new

model features up to eight megabytes of main memory and an optional hardware floating point unit,” he said. All the new terminals are compatible with earlier Dasher models and can be used with existing applications. The D 460 model offers graphics capabilities mixed with alphanumeric text, without requiring the more sophisticated software and expense associated with bitmapped graphic terminals. It was particularly suited to comprehensive electronic office applications, says Data General. The D2lO, D2ll, D4lO and D 460 terminals are new terminals in Data General’s Dasher range. Each terminal has a 12-inch, tiltable, display housing and a keyboard with a low, thin profile.
