256K RAM chip samples out
Six Japanese companies have started shipping sample 256 K-bit dynamic random access memory chips to large potential customers, with full production expected within a year or two. Japanese chip manufacturers have been quiet about their 256 K-bit developments, after concern in the United States about Japan’s capture of a large share of the 64K-bit market.
Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric, and Oki demonstrated 256Kbit chips at a recent Tokyo microcomputer show. Matsushita is expected to be a seventh company to have samples available. In the United States, Motorola, Western Electric, Texas Instruments and IBM are said to have reached an advanced stage of development with’ the large-capa-city memory chips.
