Lobster controls change

PA Wellington The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Maclntyre, has agreed to revoke a requirement that rock lobster tails must be frozen at sea at —lBdeg. A committee, set up to examine the quality controls of the rock lobster industry, has recommended that the requirement now for freezing tails at sea be revoked. It wants the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to instead prepare a Certifi-

cate of Export to satisfy the needs of organoleptic (taste) testing. The committee has recommended that the Fishing Industry Board be asked to co-ordinate the production of a handling guide for the tailing of lobsters at sea. The board, the Commercial Fishermen’s Federation, and representatives of local fishermen would then promote and encourage use of the guide. Mr Maclntyre said he

was pleased the committee had been able to resolve “a very difficult conflict” between producers and Goverment officers who had to carry the responsibility for quality control over a valuable export industry. “It is now up to Southland’s rock lobster fishermen to demonstrate positively that they can meet and maintain the quality standard required for this renowned seafood delicacy,” Mr Maclntyre said.
