Fewer jobs for disabled

PA Wellington The Government has acknowledged that fewer disabled persons are finding permanent jobs after training at sheltered workshops. The Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Young, said in a reply to a written Parliamentary question released this week that there was “statistical evidence” that this was the case. He had been asked by the Labour member of Parlia-

ment for Western Hutt, Mr J. J. Terris, if he could confirm that unemployment in the last seven years had disproportionately affected disabled persons. Mr Terris said disabled persons were being “increasingly disadvantaged.” Mr Young said no figures on the incidence of disability among unemployed people were kept. In answer to a separate Sion, the Minister of ur, Mr Bolger, said

that there were no studies or research on special problems facing the disabled in finding jobs. “Each case, however, is studied on an individual basis to develop the most appropriate response to meet the employment needs of each person,” Mr Bolger said. Mr Terris said, “One can only conclude there is a problem, which is now being ignored, but which will not go away.”
