U.S. beef quota plan not an issue — P.M.

NZPA staff correspondent Canberra The United States is considering imposing quotas on beef imports from September, including those from New Zealand, the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, has been told. An American journalist told him of the quota plan in an interview during the Prime Minister’s flight from Wellington to Canberra. But Mr Muldoon told New Zealand journalists later that he did not think the matter would be a problem, particularly in the present season, which was almost over. “There has been a coincidence of relatively high

sendings from New Zealand and now the Australian industry is wanting to send more,” he said. “But I do not think it is an issue at this early stage.” Mr Muldoon said he preferred to describe the American plan as “voluntary restraints” and said he

had no plan to raise the matter or suggest a joint approach during his talks with Australian officials. “The Meat Board and its Australian equivalent are capable of sorting it out,” he said. Talk about the level of any restriction was hypothetical.
