Nuclear weapons
Sir, — An article in the United States publication, “Defence and Foreign Affairs," has proposed the transfer of a United States aircraft carrier from reserve status to active A.N.Z.U.S. duty with the Australian Navy (“The Press,” June 23). Is this refugee from the mothball fleet intended to be Aus-
tralia’s defence against the dreaded Russian Typhoon submarines? Absurd. But this proposal makes sense as an attempt to reinforce the myth that Australia and New Zealand are at risk of attack by conventional forces. The A.N.Z.U.S. alliance and the World War II mentality that supports it, allows the United States military to maintain military bases and communications facilities in Australia and New Zealand. Those facilities have little to do with conventional warfare; they have everything to do with the development of a firststrike nuclear capability. And therein lies the real risk to the security of Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the world. — Yours, etc., ROBERT L. LEONARD. June 23, 1983.
