The economy
Sir,—“The Press,” of June 23, was an eye-opener. Teamed with the Shearer declaration was the widening gap between rich and poor and then the Hugh Fletcher surprise. As he is one of the 4.2 per cent highest income earners is this $lO gross for the unemployed to keep them quiet while the well-off, including certain powerful union members, thrive? Those now entering the unemployed lists are people who have coped, not those who do not know how. As has happened before, from them will come leaders. Handout, hand gun and fortress home are no match for people with a vision of what might be, nor will the Telethon result prove we are a caring people. Mr Beetham said, in choking inflation out of the economy Mr Muldoon was choking the economy itself. We are small and the trouble world wide; but we have led the world before.
