Wage and price freeze

Sir, — Your correspondent B. Cottril (June 22) is on very shaky ground when he uses Switzerland to support his argument that higher wages do not fuel inflation. Switzerland’s high wages are a direct result of hard work and productivity on a scale that is almost unknown in New Zealand. Militant unions and soft employers in New Zealand on the other hand, have forced wage settlements totally unrelated to productivity. Therein lies the difference. I could also add that Switzerland is not plagued by an irresponsible union movement costing all of us millions of dollars each year through needless strikes and trade bans. — Yours, etc., D. N. WREFORD. Hadlow, June 23, 1983
