School closing
Sir, — The Wainui School is said to be closing; other small communities could learn from this if the will is there. Mr David Chapple, adviser to rural schools for the Canterbury Education Board, told us that “it makes me shudder” to see small rural schools close, because it is virtually impossible to reopen them. This should be regarded as a tragedy for Wainui residents. If rural communities sincerely wish not to die out, there are steps that can be taken to avoid Wainui’s situation. For example, local residents could form a body to encourage farmers who are selling land to subdivide it into smaller holdings, and thereby encourage evitably school rolls would rise and the communities would thrive again. — Yours etc., CHRISTOPHER HARMER. Le Sons Bay, June 22, 1983.
