Aircraft carrier idea rejected by Aust.
NZPA Canberra The Australian Defence Minister, Mr Gordon Scholes, has flatly rejected the idea of an A.N.Z.U.S. aircraft carrier for the Royal Australian Navy. He was responding to a suggestion by an independent American defence publication that the Reagan Government take an old.
medium-sized American carrier out of mothballs and present it to Australia with recommissioning costs shared by the two Governments. But Mr Scholes said that the idea was just not on. It was “comparable with giving a maharaja a white elephant,” he said.
