Concern at wine mark-ups
PA Wellington Mark-ups charged on New Zealand wines in licensed restaurants were far too high in many cases, said the president of the Federation of Wine and Food Societies in New Zealand, Mr Stanley Harris. He made this criticism after finding three instances of mark-ups of about 204 per cent and more in different licensed restaurants in Auckland. One white wine which, he said, could be purchased for about $5.50 was on the wine list at $lB. Another white wine, which he estimated would have cost the restaurant at the most $5, was casting diners $l5. The third example was a red wine, appearing on the wine list at $l7 a bottle when the normal purchase price was about $5.50. He said these were probably extreme examples, but many restaurants were charging more than the traditionally accepted 100 per cent mark-up.
