Paintings charges

PA Dunedin An elderly Dunedin man faced further charges in the District Court at Dunedin yesterday relating to the alleged theft of paintings worth $27,300 from the Auckland Art Gallery between 1954 and 1971. The defendant, whose name was suppressed by Judge G. J. Seeman, now faces five charges of theft, three involving oil paintings and two watercolours.

He appeared on Monday, charged with stealing an oil painting, “Maori chief with musket at Orakei foreshore, Auckland, 1862,” by William Ewart, worth $BOOO. The new charges relate to oil paintings, “Market

woman by candlelight,” by von Schendel, worth $4BOO, and “Portrait of John Hobbs, Rangatira, Sir George Grey’s orderly, 184546,” by William Ewart, worth $BOOO. The water colours are “Ahia chief of Cloudy Bay,” worth $lOOO and “New Ply-mouth-Taranaki,” worth $5500, by J. B. C. Hoyte. At his counsel’s request, the man was further remanded without plea on $lOOO bail for two weeks to July 7 so that more inquiries could be made. Sergeant A. N. Bremner, the police prosecutor, said that should the charges be defended, there would be 10 prosecution witnesses from the Auckland area.
