Clifton Hill development
Sir, — With mounting horror I view plans to streamline the traffic flow on Clifton Hill. Although traffic has increased considerably over the last 10 years, the accident rate has remained low. Much of the beauty of the hill lies in the road’s meandering path up the hill. Development should foster this beauty, and encourage drivers’ awareness of it, and of the numerous pedestrians — joggers, children, dogs, and families out walking. Widening the road, and rounding’ off sharp corners will lead to faster speeds, making the road unsafe for all. Plans to build walkways along one side of the road are self-defeating, as pedestrians must, and will,
take to the road at some stage — a road that is no longer theirs except by courtesy of .a driver less willing and less able to slow down. Can those in the council in charge of planning, help people, not traffic? — Yours, etc., JEREMY LOVELLSMITH. February 28, 1982.
