Farmers’ S.M.P.s
Sir, — The letter by R. Mitchell in “The Press” on Saturday is unfortunately typical of the attitude held by many city people as well as trade union leaders and Labour politicians. Unless R. Mitchell is one of those unlucky people on a fixed income trying to cope with inflation, he will have received regular pay in-
creases over the . last few years, which he will no doubt feel justified in receiving. Unlike industry, the farmer cannot pass on his increased costs, and the S.M.P.s are the way the Government can try to maintain his purchasing power as increased wages do for others. The S.M.P.s are merely compensating the farmers for the increased costs that , have been imposed upon them by the rest of the community. — Yours, etc., F. R. DAVISON. • February 28, 1982.
