No play in test
From
R. T. BRITTENDEN,
in Wellington A minute before play in the first test of the Rothmans series was due to begin at the Basin Reserve yesterday, it was abandoned. It was another bitter disappointment to the Wellington officials and public. The ground, little more than an hour earlier, had been fully fit for play. About 9.30 a.m. the rain came down and a firm outfield was swiftly reduced to a quagmire. Even the encouragement of free admis-
sion today is hardly likely to bring in many spectators for the probability is that the ground will still be unfit. Both sides would probably welcome some practice, but they are not likely to get it. There is one crumb of comfort for Wellington in this sorry mess of a test. It preserves the Basin Reserve’s recent record of being a happy ground for New Zealand in terms of results. New Zealand last lost at this ground to India in 1967-68. Since then there have been four victories and two drawn games.
