Girls on the march

Seven thousand marching girls throughout New Zealand will stage a demonstration with a difference this week. Besides, publicising their sport, the girls want to help restore in New Zealanders a sense of “patriotism and national pride.” As part of national marching week the girls will stage “demonstrations” in 16 centres throughout New Zealand. Three scrolls will be taken to different mayors on today, tomorrow and Wednesday for their signatures. All three scrolls will be delivered to Auckland on Thursday morning, for final delivery to the GovernorGeneral (Sir David Beattie) at Queen Elizabeth II Square. Courier Systems, Ltd, has

undertaken to transport the scrolls throughout New Zealand on its tight schedules. The president of the New Zealand Marching Association, Mr T. N. Warrender, said: “The girls have organised their demonstration because they feel that the communication gap with the senior generation is growing wider, and that the entire community is being divided into groups and separate loyalties.” All the teams in the Canterbury centre will gather in Victoria Square at 2.15 p.m. tomorrow. They will march to Cathedral Square at 2.30 p.m. and present the scroll to the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Hamish Hay, at 3 p.m.
