The Wink impressive

Special correspondent Dunedin The Wink impressively won the Otago Mannequin Stakes at the Otago Racing Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Saturday. She now looms as a big chance to provide the Depnis Brothers with their first win in the Broadlands filly series. The Wink raced four back on the ’ inner and was in cramped quarters near the 200 m, behind the leaders. She burst through when a gap came on the outside and won going away by a length. The Wink has gone from strength to strength in her racing and she is now in second place with 15 points in the Broadlands series, three points pehind Sea Princess.

Sea Princess fought on for third, a length and a half a head from The Wink, after racing outside the pacemaker, Tempus Flight. Imperial Helen, one of the less-fancied runners, took second place. The half-sister to Helen’s Glory had been a maiden, winner at Invercargill in her previous start. The Wink (Noble Bijou— The Kurd) ran out the 1600 m in a manner that suggested she would have the remaining races in the Broadlands series — oyer 1600 m at Oamaru and Rangiora, and 2000 m at Riccarton — at her mercy. The Dennis Brothers have been to the fore in three of the five earlier series with The Dimple, The Twinkle and The Fantasy, which are out of The Pixie, a half-sister to The Wink. The Twinkle won the Otago Mannequin Stakes in 1978; The Dimple was runner-up to Powley last year, and The Fantasy third to Trieste in 1978. My Friend Blue made the pace and lasted to beat the fast finishing Double Days by a nose in the Autumn Handicap. It was the sixth winning ride for Darren Skerrett, aged 16, the Gore apprentice, who began riding in October. Skerrett’s father is a cousin of Mike Skerrett, who trains Double Days.
