Greyhounds Humbug Girl outclasses field

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

Class told in the final of the $l4OO Canterbury Futurity Stakes at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday evening as ' the warm favourite, Humbug Girl, ran away with the. race and won for her Ladbrooks owner and trainer, Roh Wilson, the first-prize cheque of $755.

The Blue Pacific-May Moss brindle greyhound bitch has had a heavy campaign in both islands, with victory in the New Zealand Oaks being her most notable success, but she has thrived on racing and was four lengths ahead of Nifty Betsy at the end of the 560 m which was run in an outstanding time of 34.105, just o.ls outside Tredeka Lass’s track record.

' Nifty Betsy, which has shown much improved form recently, began well from trap No. 2 and set a hectic pace. Midnight Mint and Humbug Girl quickly got into good positions and the trio had a good break over the rest of the field down the back straight. Humbug Girl always appeared to be travelling like the winner and she made her move on the home bend.

Nifty Betsy tried valiantly to stay with the favourite, but Humbug Girl dashed clear over the last 60m. ■ Nifty Betsy held second comfortably from Midnight Mint and there was almost four lengths back to Caldies Girl, which missed the jump but had improved to fourth down the back straight. The pace was so hot that she was unable to gain further ground. .The other four runners were well beaten. Other impressive winners were Keen Lynette, Come Alive, Typhoon Kuda, Little Upstart, Hasty Holly and Matagouri Bub.
