Rancher’s 8th win
. NZPA staff correspondent Melbourne The glamour colt, Rancher, held on to / his crown in a close finish to'the $135,000 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200 m at Caulfield on Saturday. Rancher was weakening near the finish but lasted to beat the South Australian colt, War Chest, ridden by Brent Thomson, by half a length, with a short half-head to the strong-finishing Grosvenor. Thomson also had Galleon, which beat the favourite, Manikato, by a length and three-quarters in the $lOl,OOO Futurity Stakes (1400 m Galleon ran the 1400 - in Imin 22.45, four-tenths of a second better than the previous record held jointly by Raffindale and the New Zea-land-owned Torbek. Galleon is owned by Robert Sangster’s Swettenham Stud Syndicate and is trained by Colin Hayes, who also trained the third placegetter, Soldier of Fortune. Galleon was to have contested the Australian Cup next but Hayes will now confer with Mr Sangster to see if the Sydney Triple Crown of the Canterbury and Rosehill Guineas and the AJ.C. Derby might not be the better prospect.
