Weekly lotto opposed
PA Wellington The introduction of a weekly lotto game will be strenuously opposed by the Racing Conference. Efforts by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet) to gain Cabinet approval for the game were of grave concern, the conference said. "The ' conference would find this impossible to accept when the racing industry is experiencing severe financial difficulties, almost solely because of rising costs,” it said. Racing had had no Government assistance and it was difficult to believe the Government would jeopardise an industry which employed thousands of people. Racing was not merely a gambling medium but provided entertainment as well as supporting associated industries. Lotto was purely a game of chance, sustaining no other industry by itself. “The New Zealand Racing Conference cannot escape the conclusion that the motivation for the introduction of lotto is merely to
increase Government revenue," the conference said. “Therefore, in light of the
serious repercussions of such a move the conference will strenuously oppose its introduction.”
