Statement ‘tested the wind’

PA Wellington The Social Credit leader (Mr Beetham) said yesterday that his deputy, Mr G. T. Knapp, had made statements about an informal coalition between moderate Labour and National members and Social Credit on his own initiative. "He said he would like to make a statement like that to test the wind in the league. I just wanted to make it clear to him that he was floating a suggestion,”

Mr Beetham told NZPA. He said Mr Knapp had suggested that both disenchanted Labour and National members could join the coalition. Mr Knapp on Thursday said that the recent suggestion by the Labour leader (Mr Rowling) that his party sever trade union affiliations, opened the path to the possibility of informal talks among all moderate elements in New Zealand politics.
