Council for aged in red

The Canterbury Aged People’s Council is expected to be about $50,000 in the red by the end of 1979. This figure is forecast in the annual report of the council’s chairman (Mr C. G. Riley). Although the council would receive an estimated $15,000 from the Health Department and $35,000 from the Golden Kiwi lottery, the loss for the 1979 calendar year would be $48,740, he said.

The deficit for the year ended December 31, 1978, was $28,206. The figure was considerably less than it might have been after a $35,000 Golden Kiwi grant, $46,000 in legacies, and almost $9OOO in special grants and legacies received during the year. “We were able to maintain and extend our services through the generosity of legacies and special donations,” said Mr Riley. Reduced spending in 1978 had consolidated the council’s financial position.
