Caretakers’ pay talks
Talks on a pay claim affecting school caretakers and cleaners will be held in Wellington today.
The caretakers, who are members of unions affiliated to the Cleaners and Caretakers’ Association, have held meetings throughout New Zealand in the last fortnight to vote in secret ballots on what action to take if the talks with the Educational Services Committee break down.
The secretary of the Canterbury union (Mr G. Cumming) declined to comment on the final meeting, which was held in Christchurch yesterday. The caretakers, excluding those employed by private contractors, want their wages and conditions brought up to date, in line with other State employees.
