Skydiver lucky

A Rotorua skydiver had a lucky escape yesterday when both his main and emergency parachutes failed to open properly, sending him plummeting towards ground at three times his normal landing speed, reports the Press Association. David Stockwell, a member of the Sulphur City Skydivers’ Club, was on his three hundred and sixty-first jump when the accident happened. He pulled the cord to open his main parachute but it failed to open properly, as did his

emergency parachute because of a rare malfunction. He ended up in the back yard of a house in Hannah’s Bay, east of Rotorua. Although he landed at three times his normal speed, he walked away and, according to onlookers, said that he was all right. He was believed to have been badly shaken by the accident and suffered slight injuries to an arm. He was not available for comment.
