South Africa and sport
Sir, — Mr Campbell (April 18) should be ‘aware that I have no control over the issue of a passport to Mr H. Howa. My concern is with the issue of visas to persons proceeding to South Africa. I receive my information on sporting developments from official sources. Possibly Mr Campbell acquires his from Mr Howa. Mr Howa was the administrator of a non-white cricket association with which the former white South African Cricket Association unsuccessfully sought to unite. Now that there is integration under the aegis of the new South African Cricket Union, Mr Howa’s organisation has elected to remain out in the cold. The comparatively few cricketers now playing in the Howa camp are facing far more racial discrimination than before. Apparently it bans for life any cricketer who elects to play for the nonracial cricket association under the Cricket Union, and this has reportedly extended to lifetime banning of boys aged 11. — Yours, etc P. R. LINDHORST, Consul General. April 18, 1979.
