Police injured

Five policemen vv ere injured by fists, broken bottles, and boots in a wild brawl in the East Tamaki Tavern in Otara last evening, reports the Press Association from Auckland. They were treated at Middlemore Hospital for their injuries, which included lacerations and, in at least one case, a broken nose. About 12 members of the Stormtroopers gang were arrested by the police. Inspector P. 1. Jenkinson of the Otahuhu police, said that charges of assault with intent to injure. assault, and obstructing the police had been laid.

The police vv ere called to the Papakura tavern about 7.30 p.m. in response to reports of brewing gang antagonism. When patrols arrived those allegedly involved had moved to the East Tamaki Tavern. Inspector Jenkinson said that the police had atempted to arrest one man who was intoxicated and had then been set upon by about a dozen men. Policemen had been attacked with fists and boots. Bottles had been thrown and broken bottles had been used to slash policemen. At 9.55 p.m. the tavern had been closed to prevent further trouble.
