‘Early’ Anzac Day

Officers from H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury and the inhabi-i tants of New Caledonia will: celebrate Anzac Day today instead of on Wednesday . The ceremony in New Cal-i edonia is always held on the Saturday nearest to Anzac Day so that townspeople can participate more fully. I The ceremony will take I place at the Bourail Cemej tery, three hours by bus from Noumea, where the Canterbury arrived yesterday. A detachment of French infantry and another from the Canterbury will be drawn up on either side of the slope bord-

ered by the graves of 239 New Zealanders.

Dignitaries attending will include the High Commissioner of the French Republic, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in New Caledonia, the Mayor of Bourail, tlie New Zealand consulgeneral (Mr D. Morris), and the Commander of H.M.N Z.S. Canterbury (Commander S. F. Teagle).

After prayers in French and English, wreaths will be laid by the official party and by’ Commander Teagle, the Australian Vice-Consul, and Mr P. Krause, who will represent the 3rd New Zealand Division Association.

While the troops are forming up outside the cemetery. 3rd Division Association members will distribute poppies to the public, and Bourail children will lay flowers on each grave.
