Cricket club can expand

An appeal against a Christchurch City Council decision to approve the expansion of the Old Collegians Cricket Club at Elmwood Park has been rejected by the Planning Tribunal.

The owner of a house next to the park had objected to the expansion, on the grounds that cricket balls!, coming over fences were already a problem, and a bigger”pavilion would provide more room for social functions and drinking. However, the tribunal said that approval for a liquor licence would be up to the Liquor Licensing Control Commission. An application for a licence would be open to public objection, preserving the applicant’s rights in that matter. Other evidence in support of the project had satisfied the tribunal that it was necessary to expand the pavilion, and a conditional use to allow that was justified.

Certain conditions, including limited social hours and membership, would be required of the club.
