Nelson prisoner escapes
Nelson reporter A prisoner being escorted to the Nelson X-ray Centre escaped from a police escort yesterday morning and has not been seen since. The man, Ray Alexander Nicholson, was described by
police as dangerous. The public have been warned not to approach him. “He has vanished, and it is doubtful if he is still in Nelson,” said Senior-Ser-geant P. W. Bickley last evening. Nicholson, aged 25, was arrested on Thursday evening in a Nelson hotel and later charged with assaulting a policeman (in the course of arrest), with assaulting a person assisting the police, and with being in possession of cannabis.
He was being escorted to the X-ray Centre between 9.15 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. when he escaped. He was to have appeared in the Magistrate’s Court later in the morning. Nicholson, who has an Australian accent, is 190 cm tall (6ft 3in) and of thin build, with shoulder-length, curly, brown hair. He has blue eyes, a thin moustache, and a beard. When last seen running towards Halifax Street he was wearing darkbrown trousers with a patch on the back and a brownchecked shirt. One arm was in a white sling.
