Fish farming
Sir, — Mr McAhealey’s letter supporting trout farming (April 16) shows a blind following for commercialising trout. Dr Mike Hine is of the Ministry of Fisheries, who always supp o r t commercial ex-? ploitation, regardless of the consequences (e.g. sea fisheries). Experts such as Dr K. Morris, of Rotorua, Messrs Burstall and Gibbs, fisheries experts of the Wildlife Division, Rotorua, who have seen overseas trout farms, have given an emphatic “no” to fish farming. There is factual evidence from Australia to show that commercialising fish has given rise to uncontrollable poaching of public waters. There is factual evidence from Denmark, Britain and the United States on the dangers and problems of fish farming. Finally, where is the economic justification for trout farming? I have not heard one yet. Mr Isaacs admits there is no “export potential” and said on the radio programme domestically it would wholesale for $7 a kilo. — Yours, etc.. E. R. BASON. April 16, 1979.
