Jobless up 1400
PA Wellington The number of persons registered as unemployed rose by 1422 to 25,156 in the two weeks to April 12, the Acting Minister of Labour (Mr Thomson) announced yesterday.
The increase over the March 30 figure was mainly a result of seasonal work’s starting to fall off. The biggest increases were in Hamilton (230), Christchurch (213), Hastings (199), and Manuka (181).
Increases occurred in 18 districts. Decreases were recorded in only four. The jobless include 3232 school-leavers, a decrease of 584 on two weeks earlier. Unfilled vacancies notified to the Labour Department totalled 1736, Mr Thomson said.
Unemployment figures in South Island centres, with figures for the previous twoweek period in parenthesis, are:
Blenheim, 337 (289); Nelson, 447 (416); Greymouth. 204 (201); Christchurch, 3863 (3650); Timaru, 328 (266); Dunedin, 510 (442); Invercargill, 196 (194).
