Thatched roof to be inspected
Westport reporter The New Zealand Fire Service has told the Buller County Council that it will inspect the controversial thatched-roof home of Mr Roger Hill at Pahautane Farm, on the Coast Road. Approval for the roof was given by the council at its February meeting. Mr Hill was originally granted a permit to build a house on Pahautane Farm after approval of plans which included galvanised iron roofing. A subsequent inspection by the health and building inspector showed that thatch was being used as roofing material. Mr Hill then wTOte to the council asking for the deviation to be approved. The council obtained
opinions on legal and firesafety aspects of permitting the use of thatch as roofing material. The Fire Service asked the council not to approve the roofing material as it
believed It to be potentially dangerous. But it could not make a Riling on it as thatch was not mentioned in any building by-laws. The council approved
Mr Hill’s request subject to the supervision of the health and building inspector. The Fire Service has not formally dealt with the council’s decision but the
matter has been discussed with the Fire Comrnissioner. The thatched roof will be inspected by a Fire Service officer before any further action is taken.
