Salmon exports

Sir, — I wish to correct a misleading statement in your paper on Saturday, April 14 (Salmon exports in view) in which it was stated that the salmon tagging machine in use by Fisheries Research Division was purchased with the assistance of the Salmon Anglers Association. This machine, which has been in use for two years was given to the division by the South Island Council of Acclimatisation Societies at a cost to the council of about $12,000. The machine has been used extensively with 141,000 fish tagged in 1977 and 335,000 in 1978. The return of tagged adults is just beginning with, eight fish captured so far. The bulk of the returning fish is expected to begin during the 1979-1980 season. The quoted figure of 18 per cent return of adults is extraordinarily high. A return of 1 per cent would be regarded by us as very favourable. — Yours, etc.. DR R. M. McDOWALL. Fisheries Research Division, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. April 17, 1979.
